Getting Married in Italy from the UK: Your Guide to Italian Wedding Paperwork

A romantic guide for UK couples planning a legal wedding in Italy

19 August 20269 min read

There is something truly magical about getting married in Italy.

Imagine saying “I do” surrounded by the mountains and beautiful blue waters of Lake Garda, with your closest family and friends beside you, followed by delicious Italian food, sunshine and an unforgettable celebration.

For many UK couples, getting married in Italy is the dream.

But once you have found your perfect Italian wedding venue, there is often one question that comes next:

“How do we actually get legally married in Italy?”

The legal paperwork can seem complicated at first, but with the right preparation and guidance, it doesn't have to take away from the excitement of planning your wedding.

As a Lake Garda wedding planner, I help UK couples understand the legal process from the UK through to their wedding day in Italy.

My aim is simple:

You enjoy the romance. I'll help take care of the details.

Can UK Couples Get Legally Married in Italy?

Yes. UK nationals can have a legally recognised civil wedding in Italy, providing the required documents and procedures are completed correctly.

This means you can have your actual legal ceremony in Italy rather than legally marrying in the UK first and simply holding a symbolic ceremony abroad.

For couples dreaming of a legal wedding in Lake Garda, this means your Italian wedding can truly be the moment you become husband and wife.

There is, however, some important paperwork to complete before you get there.

When Should You Start Your Italian Wedding Paperwork?

Getting the timing right is one of the most important parts of the process.

For the Italian authorities, the formal legal paperwork process should not begin more than six months before your wedding date for the documents to be recognised for your Italian marriage process.

This is important because the documents have specific validity periods.

You therefore don't want to complete everything too early, but equally you don't want to leave your paperwork until the last minute.

I recommend that my couples start discussing their legal paperwork with me well before the six-month period, so that they understand what they need and are ready to begin the formal process at the correct time.

Your Certificate of No Impediment — CNI

One of the key documents for UK couples getting married in Italy is the Certificate of No Impediment, commonly known as a CNI.

You will generally need to arrange an appointment with the appropriate UK Register Office to give notice of your intention to marry.

Before attending your CNI appointment, you will need to prepare the required documents. These will normally include:

  • Your passport
  • Your birth certificate
  • Proof of your UK address
  • The details and address of where you will legally marry in Italy

It is important to have the name and address of the Italian venue or Comune where your civil ceremony will take place available for your appointment.

The exact requirements can depend on your individual circumstances, so your relevant Register Office should always be checked before attending.

Once your notice has been given, it is normally displayed for 28 days before your Certificate of No Impediment can be released to you.

This 28-day period is an important part of planning your Italian wedding paperwork.

Preparing Your Documents for Italy

Once your CNI and other required UK documents have been issued, there are further steps before they can be used for your legal wedding in Italy.

The required declarations and supporting paperwork need to be completed correctly, and documents must be prepared in the appropriate format for the Italian authorities.

This is often the stage where couples start asking:

  • Which document needs signing?
  • Who needs to witness it?
  • What needs to be legalised?
  • What needs translating?
  • Where does everything need to go?

When you're planning your wedding from the UK, it can feel like a lot to organise.

This is where having someone guide you through the process can make a real difference.

Your Documents Must Be Legalised With an Apostille

Once your required UK wedding documents have been issued, they must be legalised with an Apostille before they can be used as part of your legal wedding process in Italy.

The Apostille is issued through the UK Legalisation Office and confirms the authenticity of the relevant signature, stamp or seal on your UK document.

This is an essential step in preparing your paperwork for the Italian authorities.

Before sending your documents for legalisation, you need to complete the application and pay the required fee to the UK Legalisation Office.

Once your application and payment have been made, you follow the instructions provided for submitting your original documents.

The Legalisation Office is based at Hanslope Park in Milton Keynes, which is why couples often refer to this as the Milton Keynes Legalisation Office.

Once your documents have been processed and the Apostille has been attached, they are ready for their journey to Italy.

From the UK to Italy

This is where I can take away another part of the stress for you.

Once your documents have been correctly completed and legalised with their Apostille, I personally hand-deliver your important wedding paperwork to Italy.

I then help coordinate the necessary Italian translations and take the paperwork through the relevant Italian legal process and Comune.

You don't have to arrive in Italy carrying your important documents and wondering where they need to go.

I can help take care of that for you.

For my UK couples, having someone they know and trust already here in Italy can give them real peace of mind.

Translating Your Wedding Documents

Your UK paperwork needs to be prepared for the Italian authorities, including the required translations into Italian.

I work with my trusted translator to help arrange the necessary translations for the legal process.

Your translator can also assist during your civil wedding ceremony, as the legal ceremony is conducted in Italian.

So your translator can become part of your journey from the paperwork stage right through to the moment you say:

“I do.”

The Italian Comune

Once your documents have arrived in Italy and been prepared correctly, they need to go through the relevant Italian authorities and Comune, which is the local town hall responsible for your civil marriage.

I help coordinate this process and liaise with my contacts in Italy to make sure the necessary paperwork is presented correctly.

This is one of the benefits of having a Lake Garda wedding planner based in Italy.

You don't have to try to navigate the Italian system from the UK.

You have someone here who can help manage the practical side of the process for you.

And Then Comes the Most Important Part…

After the certificates, appointments, 28-day waiting period, Apostilles, translations and paperwork, there is one very special thing left to do.

Get married.

You can finally forget about documents and start thinking about the moment you've been waiting for.

Walking towards the person you love.

Seeing your family and friends watching you.

Saying your vows with the mountains of Lake Garda behind you.

And knowing that your Italian wedding isn't just beautiful...

It's your legal wedding day.

Important Information

This guide is specifically written for UK nationals planning a legal civil wedding in Italy, particularly couples planning to marry in Lake Garda.

If you are a national of another country, the documentation and legal process may be different.

Requirements can also vary depending on your individual circumstances and the Italian Comune where you are getting married. Official requirements and procedures can change, so couples should always check the current requirements that apply to their circumstances before beginning the formal paperwork process.
